SDE Intern

June - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I liked that the team I worked on had compiled a project for me to complete for the summer. I worked on backend and frontend and used AWS tools, which I feel like helped me learn a lot.

What I wish was different

Since it was remote, it was pretty hard for me to interact with anyone besides my manager and intern. It was pretty lonely working 8 hours a day in front of a laptop.

Advice

Don’t overwork yourself. I worked overtime trying to get my project done, but I stressed myself out unnecessarily.

Warehouse Associate

September 2020 • Chino, CA

What I liked

In the crazy times we have now, it's nice to be able to get out of the house and do something. Not being all cooped up.

What I wish was different

I wish there was better communication between managers because one will say one thing and the others will all say something else from that.

Advice

The training at first is overwhelming, but if you just keep practicing and looking through handbooks and videos it becomes super easy. Also don't be afraid to talk to people and ask questions.

Newspaper Delivery Driver

April 2020 • Elizabeth, NJ

What I liked

Working on my own. Paid for full 10 hour day even if I finish early.

What I wish was different

The amount of time we have to load the van in the morning. The rabbit (the phone they give us to make deliveries on) needs to go back to the original charger port where I can plug the charger in. The magnetic port keeps disconnecting from the charger.

Advice

Have the camera ready before you get out the van. If its one package, scan it on the way to the address to move faster. Move steady, walk fast, put the oversize boxes in order so that you can get to them quicker. Use any trick you can to keep the job and move at a quicker pace to get home sooner and have a good day!

What I liked

I liked the community of people that I worked with. The environment was also fast paced, so time would pass quickly whenever I worked.

What I wish was different

I wish that the management had been a little different. There wasn't any room for errors, that kind of pressure made many of the employees feel belittled and defeated.

Advice

It was physically demanding job. Wear a back brae and arch supporting shoes!

Area Manager Intern

June - August 2020 • North Brunswick, NJ

What I liked

I really enjoyed receiving exposure to Amazon’s vast operations, leadership & skill training, immersing myself in case studies, and networking with Amazonians and interns globally! The virtual curriculum, moderated group discussions, Speaker Series webinars, and Amazon’s online resources for networking and professional development were extremely fruitful during these times as growing leaders are needed more than ever. It was a pleasure being a part of Amazon’s prestigious Programs & Campaigns and most importantly building trusted Relationships & Partnerships throughout the journey!

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship could have been at a physical fulfillment center, contrary to us interning from home. The actual Area Manager role is a very hands-on role that requires you to lead a team, facilitate managerial functions, and connect with individuals along with enduring physical labor. The online internship experience included discussions over Amazon chime, leadership curriculum presented through readings and speaker series from Amazon’s senior associates, as well as projects and case studies presented to us by our Team Lead; however, in the actual fulfillment center, we would be able to not only learn certain important managerial functions but also implement them and test strategies for raising employee engagement. The original internship also included relocation to a fulfillment center in Nevada, which would have been interesting considering I never interned in another state, let alone, that company being Amazon. Overall, I wish I could have performed the Area Manager Internship in a physical fulfillment center rather than online. I could have gained more hands-on experience being on-site.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is that Amazon is a company that builds leaders and emphasizes their principles through obsessing over the customer. As the world’s largest online retailer, Amazon communicates its leadership principles throughout their company structure, and there is nothing more important in a manager role than leadership. I would encourage those who are not only interested in management and operations for this Area Manager Internship, but I also would like to encourage rising leaders in whichever field you may be in. In my cohort alone, there were only three out of 15 students who were pursuing a major in operations, where everyone else sought careers in supply chain, nursing, finance, and even myself in accounting. I would also encourage everyone, whether they are pursuing this position on-site or online, that this internship is very comprehensive. There are many leadership speaker series and discussions with your Team Lead that builds your knowledge of Amazon’s internal operations, so it is important to be attentive, cooperative, and proactive to get the most out of the internship and respect your peers. Some examples would be leading the discussions with your Team Lead, doing tasks timely, preparing for discussions the day before, etc. Therefore, I believe those who see themselves and want to build themselves as leaders to consider pursuing the Area Manager Internship.

Software Developer Intern

June - September 2020 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I liked the close knit team and ability to make real software that positively impacted people.

What I wish was different

I wish that it hadn’t been virtual. I wish that perhaps there had been a bit more direction.

Advice

I would say that you get out what you put in. If you put pride into your work and make good design choices and write well-tested code, you will get a lot out of it.
