What I liked

Consistent schedule; friendly office environment; a sense of community; management was responsive to needs of the employees; free access to Udemy, Linda, and Fidelity education network

What I wish was different

Not much work to do, so some days were idle

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Merrimack, NH

What I liked

I liked the work quite a bit. They gave the opportunity to solve real problems and most people treat you like a full-time employee.

What I wish was different

I wish they would provide housing. Housing in the area is pretty expensive if you are too far away to bring your own furniture. The other thing is that Fidelity has offices all over the world, so most of the work is done over videoconferencing. This means that most of the people you work with, you will rarely, if ever, see in person.

Advice

Make sure you understand what is going on. Ask a lot of questions early. Don't let time go by where you do nothing because you don't know what is going on.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The office environment and the opportunities to network with such a large group of people

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunities to make actual important contributions to my team- doing work that wasn’t just “by the book”

Advice

At such a large company, its important to make more conversation and actively get your name out beyond your team- its easy to get lost as just another young face in as big a group as this one

Business Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

Unfortunately I was originally put on a group with very little work for me to do and I was not learning. I started to learn and enjoy the scope of my work once I took the initiative to move onto a more technical team.

What I wish was different

Planning out projects for the interns prior to of the first week and ending up saying “oh, we have interns. Let’s find something for them to do.” Also, there were lots of technical issues which made it hard to do work for the first month without access to some softwares, computer issues, etc.

Advice

Fidelity truly cares more about what you will learn from the internship as opposed to what you can give to the team. If you feel like you aren’t learning or would like to experience something different, speak up!

Technical Intern

May - August 2018 • Merrimack, NH

What I liked

I enjoyed the candid nature of the company, along with the fact that everyone was willing to adapt and be open minded about taking on different opportunities during my internship between departments. The flexibility was amazing, and I truly loved the experience.

What I wish was different

The bureaucracy is a bit intense on the administrative side, and while that did impact the first week or so of my internship, everyone was really understanding and mindful that this is just the way that such a large institution has to work.

Advice

Be honest with everyone around you! Fidelity provided me and my fellow interns with an environment to learn and contribute in equal parts. Make mistakes, talk to people, and most of all act with your team, you're only going to get the best out of this internship if you're just as ready to engage as your mentors and those around you.
