Wealth Management Summer Analyst

July - August 2020 • Summit, NJ

What I liked

J.P. Morgan is one of the largest financial institutions in the world, and certainly makes the extra effort to incorporate the value of its interns. Not only was I able to hear from a number of senior executives about their experiences with the firm, I was treated as if I was a full-time analyst on the team. The tasks and projects I was given gave me a better understanding of the industry and what the analyst program would ultimately entail. All in all, this was a huge help when it came to making a decision at the end of the internship to return after graduation.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID-19, the summer analyst program was shortened and made completely virtual. Even though I was able to virtually meet and have “coffee chats” with almost everyone on the team, I wish I could have worked with everyone in person. However, the firm definitely did the best they could given the unforeseen circumstances.

Advice

Get up early to prepare and read up on markets. Soak up all relevant news headlines, review your calendar, and lay out anything you have to do throughout the day. Treat everyday with the same enthusiasm as your first, and complete everything that comes your way in a timely manner. Whether its in person or virtual, reach out and get to know everyone you possibly can!

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

July - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Although the experience was online, I was still given the opportunity to work in a similar environment as if I had been working in the office (type of projects, team exposure, group events, etc.). I was given as much work as I was willing to take on, and the team genuinely seemed to appreciate my help/sought my opinion on matters. I felt as though I was valued as an intern, and that my performance was evaluated fairly. Overall, I had the opportunity to learn first-hand what the Full Time role would entail, and I feel as though the experience taught me as much about myself as it did about the position/industry.

What I wish was different

The virtual environment was obviously not ideal; if there is ever an option of deciding to work at home or in the office, I highly support working in the office as I feel that will give a better sense of the role. Because of the virtual environment, I also felt as though it was somewhat difficult to connect with some of the other interns/group members that I was not staffed with.

Advice

The internship position is just as important in gauging your own interest in the role as it is your team gauging your performance/return offer. I would try to be as honest as possible with yourself. The hours are long, the job can be mundane at times, and there is a clear hierarchy of which you sit at the very bottom; however, I truly believe that if you have the right mentality and know what you want out of your life in the next 2+ years (exit opportunities or otherwise), investment banking and JPMorgan present some of the greatest opportunities as an undergraduate.
