It was a great experience to learn and be up close with doctors while doing meaningful work.

What I wish was different

More time as the commitment was pretty hard on a student schedule. Also higher pay since the work was pretty intensive.

Advice

Learn the material as best as you can and have a fast typing speed. At my site, even though they say it should be >80 WPM, its helpful if its over 100.

What I liked

I like medical scribing because it offered me very in-depth exposure to the field of emergency medicine. It also has giving me an opportunity to meet a very wide variety of Providers from emergency medicine physicians to mid-level providers such as physicians assistance and nurse practitioners. Where I specifically work, I get a fast paced environment and basically a front row seat to emergency medicine.

What I wish was different

There is very few that I wish would have been different as I really love my job.The only thing that I wish would be different would be the pay. I feel as though the critical aspect of my job such as making sure that I document the correct information. This information can intern be useful to the patient, the hospital, and in some cases in legal court. Making $10 an hour definitely has its downs to the job.

Advice

I would say absolutely go for it. This job is absolutely incredible for students looking into pre-medicine, pre-nursing, and or pre-PA. Honestly, this would be a wonderful job for individuals discerning whether or not they want a career in the medical field.

What I liked

I liked working alongside emergency room physicians and learning medical lingo. I really enjoyed learning out the emergency room worked, the interesting cases and learning the reasons a physician makes the decisions they do when determining course of treatment.

What I wish was different

I wish that the management scribes understood that most of the scribes are college students and were more lenient when it came to scheduling. For example, if we had 8 AM classes, they would still schedule for 9 hour overnight shifts until 7 AM. Another thing would be that the physicians sometimes (not all of them) would get upset if we didn't know intensive medical language or test interpretations and would have to ask them questions. We also rarely got a meal break unless the physician themselves decided to take one and so we'd have to go a long 9 hour shift without food.

Advice

Being a scribe in the emergency room is a very informative and difficult job. If in college with a family, it might not be a great balancing job between school/job/life, but will help those that are premed to get used to the hard hours and cases they will have to face one day. If someone is able, I believe it would be an amazing experience that might be better for shadowing experience and not so much an actual job during college.

I enjoyed the exposure to the medical field of that the position brings. Collaborating with physicians and other medical professionals was an inspiring and gratifying experience.

I wish there was a more efficient and streamlined management/administration that oversaw the medical scribes.

Advice

Be prepared to see a large volume of patient's all while documenting their medical charts. Do not be afraid to ask the physician any questions you may have regarding a specific patient's chart.

As I am pre-med, this job has given me the opportunity to write medical charts for patients and follow around doctors and physician assistants. I get to look at test results and learn about the medical decision making process. I have learned so much!

The salary; I feel that the amount of stress and responsibility the job encompasses is disproportional to the amount of pay that we receive.

Advice

The experience is very valuable and a great insight to how the ED operates. I would recommend this to anyone with remote aspirations in pursuing a career in medicine.
