I liked the work of designing a new processor. I also liked that the work may one day be useful to cutting-edge research on AI.

I wish it had started earlier; we did not get a whole lot done before the end of the summer.

I wish the job had been able to be in-person. Some of our community partnerships were canceled due to COVID.

Graduate Research Assistant

What I liked

I enjoyed both the subject of my research and the fact that I was able to log research hours at my own pace over the course of my position.

What I wish was different

I wish I had met up with my team more frequently, as I found each of our meetings to be extremely productive and motivating. In an ideal world, I would have loved to be working with my colleagues in person rather than online and over zoom.

Advice

I would say that the more communication and collaboration you have with other research assistants and your advisor, the more successful you will be in your own work.

I wish there hadn't been a pandemic so I could've done work in the lab as well.

What I liked

I liked the flexibility involved with making my zoom class. I was able to design a class relating to physics and teach to high school students in the Charlottesville area.

What I wish was different

The program was a little disorganized in the beginning, but it was the first year of the CDE Circle Project idea and it was quickly made for students who had their internships cancelled.

Advice

Remember to check your emails about how the CDE Circle Project if you’re an engineering student. They may do this program again.

It was virtual so it was very convenient

What I wish was different

We had a set time for our individual classes (2-5pm every weekdays) which was not very flexible

The time commitment is pretty large but the workload is pretty reasonable
